Kayaking is one of the most accessible ways to get on the water – whether you’re exploring calm lakes, coastal routes or rivers closer to home.
If you’re new to the sport, here are our top 5 tips to get started the right way:
1. Start somewhere calm
Choose flat water for your first sessions – lakes, slow-moving rivers or sheltered bays. Build confidence before tackling bigger conditions. You can join a local kayaking club or get some lessons. Cardiff International White Water where our store is based offer coached flat water taster sessions (and more adrenaline filled sessions too!) – stop by our store to say hi and check out our full range of gear.
2. Choose the right kayak
Sit-on-top kayaks are stable and beginner-friendly. Sit-inside kayaks offer more protection from the elements and are great for touring and moving water.
3. Prioritise safety
A properly fitted buoyancy aid or PFD (personal floatation device) is essential – no exceptions. Comfort and safety go hand in hand. We’ve got quality PFDs for all budgets.
4. Dress for the water temperature
Not the air temperature. UK water stays cold for much of the year – the right layers or a drysuit make a huge difference.
5. Keep It Simple
You don’t need every accessory on day one. Start with the core kit, then build your setup as you gain experience.
